In the UK according to research gathered in 2009 an estimated 60.8% of adults and 31.1% of children were overweight.
That’s right! Three out of every five people you meet today will be overweight – and until the summer of 2012 I was one of them.
Even more worrying from the 2009 research, is that almost a quarter of adults (22% of men, 24% of women) in England were classified as obese which means having a BMI (Body Mass Index) of 30kg/m² or over.
Another shocking statistic is that waist circumference is increasing which is another key health predictor. Back in 2009 38%of adults had a raised waist circumference compared to only 23% in 1993. Again, I am sad to say I was one of those people with a larger waist than I should have had. This FREE Weight loss Guide explains Altered Images ACE approach to controlling your weight and understanding how to reduce your waist size.
Another chilling fact is that as many as 30,000 people die prematurely every year from obesity-related conditions.
Some health experts believe being overweight is responsible for more health problems than smoking. Being significantly overweight can also link you to a wide range of unwanted health problems such as:
- High blood pressure
- Certain cancers (breast/ prostate)
- Snoring & sleep apnoea
- Stress, anxiety, and depression
A study by the National Audit Office estimates that obesity costs the NHS at least £500m a year – and the wider economy more than £2bn a year in lost productivity, so in a recession it pays to be lean and healthy!
The problem is growing rapidly with experts predicting that 75% of the population could suffer the effects of excess weight within 10-15 years.
